Project 1

Discovering, Nurturing and Supporting Talents through Extracurricular Activities.

Target Countries: Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.

Task: Organize the following competitions/festivals in Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan to identify talents that can be supported to grow.

Background Information

Currently these countries do not have any ‘extracurricular’ activities embedded in the education systems thus making it difficult to discover, support and grow talents! Our short-term strategy is to organize competitions/festivals for various activities as listed below, while our long-term strategy is to champion/campaign for the inclusion of ‘extracurricular’ activities into the education systems of these countries. Any project in the proposed areas below may be implemented in any the countries or a combination of countries. The proposed short-term activities include;

  • Acting/Drama/Movie competitions/festivals. These talents are very much present in these countries but as mentioned above the absence of extracurricular activities in the education systems and lack of any local and national competitions limits the detection of these talents.

Target Countries: Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania

  • Reading, writing, content Analysis and storytelling. Traditionally these countries, with the exception of South Sudan, have been French speaking-combined with local dialects as national languages but slowly adopting English and Swahili as required of them under the East African Community-EAC integration protocols. Therefore reading, writing and storytelling activities will help them perfect and own these languages. Having got independence most recently, South Sudan needs support to expose and bring to the limelight their potential in these activities. Their sterling performers can for instance be show-cased during national and international events to champion their plights.

Target Countries: Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.

  • Athletics competitions (Unlike their Kenyan and Ugandan counterparts, these countries have not produced many global stars in athletics yet they have the potential. Organizing half marathon and full-marathon competitions is also included under this activity. For instance those who emerge as promising winners can be supported to train in elite training camps (with established champions) such as Iten training camp in Kenya.

Target Countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.

  • Ball games competitions. Currently Rwanda and Burundi have football teams that are currently gaining great recognition in the region, including some qualifying for and participating in the Africa Cup of Nations competitions. Advancement in other ball games such as volleyball, tennis, rugby, basketball, etc. are not yet fully developed.

Target Countries: Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and
South Sudan.

(vii) Music and Dancing competitions/festivals. Rwandese and Burundians are
particularly well known for their spectacular unique cultural dancing and music talents.
Unfortunately they lack exposure and their music is usually in their local dialects…Thus
limiting the number of interested listeners/viewers. Still there are many more talents in
music and cultural dances that are yet to be brought to the limelight. South Sudan
exhibits a lot potential but extracurricular activities are yet to deepen.

Target Countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.
